WhatsApp for Seniors: How to Call, Text, and Share Photos with Family

WhatsApp has become one of the most popular communication apps worldwide, connecting over two billion users across every continent. It is especially valuable for seniors who want to stay in touch with family members who live far away, because it works over the internet and does not charge for messages or calls.
The app is completely free to use and works on both iPhone and Android smartphones. This guide will teach you everything you need to know to start using WhatsApp with confidence. You will learn how to send messages, make voice and video calls, share photos, and manage group chats.
Installing and Setting Up WhatsApp
Open the App Store on iPhone or Google Play Store on Android. Search for WhatsApp Messenger and tap Install. Once installed, open the app and tap Agree and Continue to accept the terms of service. You will need to verify your phone number by entering the code sent via text message.
After verification, WhatsApp will ask permission to access your contacts. Granting this permission allows WhatsApp to show you which of your contacts already use the app. You can also add a profile photo and a short status message that your contacts will see.
Sending Text Messages
The main screen of WhatsApp shows your chat list. Tap the green circular icon with a pencil or plus sign in the bottom right corner to start a new chat. Search for or select a contact who uses WhatsApp. A text field will appear at the bottom of the screen where you can type your message.
After typing your message, tap the send icon which looks like a paper airplane. Your message will show a single gray check mark when sent, two gray check marks when delivered to the recipient’s phone, and two blue check marks when the recipient has read your message.
Making Voice and Video Calls
WhatsApp calls are free, even for international calls. To make a voice call, open a chat with the person you want to call and tap the phone icon at the top of the screen. The phone will ring on their end, and they can answer by tapping the green answer button.
For video calls, tap the camera icon instead of the phone icon. Video calls let you see the person you are talking to, which is wonderful for connecting with grandchildren or family members who live far away. Make sure you are in a well-lit room so the other person can see you clearly.
Sharing Photos and Videos
To share a photo, open a chat and tap the plus icon or camera icon next to the text field. Select Gallery or Photos to choose an existing picture, or tap Camera to take a new photo right then. You can add a caption before sending by typing in the text field above the photo.
WhatsApp also allows you to send voice messages. Instead of typing, press and hold the microphone icon next to the text field, speak your message, and release. The voice message will be sent automatically. This is much faster than typing and allows you to convey tone and emotion more naturally.
Creating and Managing Group Chats
Group chats allow multiple people to communicate in one conversation. To create a group, tap the chat icon, then New Group. Select the contacts you want to add and tap Next. Give your group a name like Family or Book Club and choose an optional group icon.
Groups are perfect for family coordination sharing holiday plans, sending updates about health appointments, or just sharing funny photos. You can mute a group if the notifications become overwhelming by tapping the group name at the top of the screen and selecting Mute Notifications.
Privacy and Security Tips
WhatsApp uses end-to-end encryption, which means only you and the person you are communicating with can read your messages. Not even WhatsApp can see them. This makes WhatsApp one of the most secure messaging apps available.
Be cautious about messages from unknown numbers. If someone you do not know sends you a message claiming to be a family member in trouble or asking for money, verify their identity by calling them directly. Scammers sometimes create fake accounts to trick people.
WhatsApp is a powerful tool for staying connected. Start by messaging one or two family members, then gradually explore voice calls, video calls, and group chats as you grow more comfortable. The more you use it, the more natural it will feel.
