Meta Cuts 8,000 Jobs, Intuit Slashes 3,000 as AI Restructuring Sweeps Tech

Meta initiated the first round of its planned 10% workforce reduction this week, cutting roughly 8,000 roles as part of an efficiency drive tied to heavy AI spending. The layoffs at the Facebook and Instagram parent company came the same day Intuit announced it would eliminate 3,000 positions, or 17% of its global workforce, marking one of the most aggressive single-day restructuring waves Silicon Valley has seen this year.

Meta had already reassigned approximately 7,000 employees to new AI-focused groups in recent days, reorganizing teams to prioritize model development and infrastructure.

Intuit CEO Sasan Goodarzi told employees in an internal memo that the company is simplifying its structure and reducing complexity as it pushes deeper into AI. The TurboTax maker has partnered with OpenAI and Anthropic under multi-year agreements.

The two announcements pushed the total tech job cuts in 2026 past 111,000 across more than 140 companies, according to Layoffs.fyi.

The layoffs reflect a pattern where Big Tech trims non-core roles to redirect resources toward AI infrastructure. Companies including Cisco, Block, and Amazon have all announced cuts in recent weeks.

Affected Intuit workers in the U.S. will remain on payroll through July 31, receiving 16 weeks of base pay plus two weeks per year of service. The restructuring wave comes as Big Tech commits over billion to AI data centers and chips this year alone.
