Social Media Privacy Guide for Seniors: How to Keep Your Information Safe

Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter are wonderful tools for staying connected with family and friends. However, they also collect significant amounts of personal information, and not all of that information is protected by default. Taking control of your privacy settings ensures you can enjoy social media without compromising your security.

This guide focuses on privacy settings for Facebook, the most popular social media platform among seniors. The principles apply to other platforms as well. Taking 30 minutes to review your settings can dramatically reduce your exposure to scams and unwanted attention.

Reviewing Your Profile Information

Open Facebook and tap your profile picture in the top left corner. Tap About to see what information you have shared. Review each section including contact info, work history, education, and personal details. Ask yourself whether each piece of information needs to be public.

Consider hiding your birth date, showing only the month and day without the year. Remove your home address if it is displayed. Limit your phone number to Only Me. Scammers can use this information to answer security questions or impersonate you to your contacts.

Controlling Who Sees Your Posts

By default, your Facebook posts may be visible to Public, which means anyone in the world can see them. Change this to Friends so only people you have accepted as friends can see what you post. To adjust this, go to Settings and Privacy, then Privacy Shortcuts.

For individual posts, use the audience selector button before posting. This button shows who can see the post. You can select Friends, Only Me for private notes, or a custom list of specific people. Be particularly careful with posts about travel plans or expensive purchases, as these can attract thieves.

Managing Friend Requests

Do not accept friend requests from people you do not know. Scammers create fake profiles using stolen photos and names. They may send a friend request and, once accepted, start messaging you with urgent requests for money. If you receive a friend request from someone you already know, it may be a fake account pretending to be them.

To check if a friend request is legitimate, look at the profile. Does it have very few photos or posts? Was it created recently? Do you have mutual friends in common? When in doubt, contact the person through another method like phone or email to ask if they sent the request.

Adjusting Timeline and Tagging Settings

Go to Settings and Privacy, then Settings, then Timeline and Tagging. Here you can control who can post on your timeline and who can see posts you are tagged in. Enable the setting that requires your approval before posts you are tagged in appear on your timeline.

This prevents someone from tagging you in an inappropriate or embarrassing post that would then appear on your profile. You will receive a notification when someone tags you and can choose to approve or reject the tag before it becomes visible to your friends.

Blocking and Reporting Unwanted Users

If someone is sending you unwanted messages, commenting inappropriately on your posts, or making you feel uncomfortable, you can block them. Go to their profile, tap the three dots next to their name, and select Block. Blocked users cannot see your profile or contact you through Facebook.

For more serious situations involving harassment, scams, or threats, use the Report feature. Facebook reviews reported content and may remove the offending account. Do not hesitate to report concerning behavior it helps protect not only yourself but other users who might be targeted.

Regular Privacy Checkups

Facebook offers a Privacy Checkup tool that walks you through your settings step by step. Access it by going to Settings and Privacy, then Privacy Checkup. The tool reviews who can see your information, how people can find you, and your data sharing settings with third-party apps.

Perform this privacy checkup every few months. Facebook frequently updates its settings and may change default options that affect your privacy. A regular review ensures your settings reflect your current preferences and that no new features have exposed information you intended to keep private.
