Online Shopping Guide for Seniors: How to Shop Safely on Amazon and Beyond

Online shopping offers convenience that brick-and-mortar stores cannot match. You can shop from the comfort of your home, compare prices across multiple sellers, read reviews from other customers, and have purchases delivered directly to your door. Many seniors discover that online shopping saves time and eliminates the physical strain of walking through large stores.
Amazon is the largest online store in the world, but the tips in this guide apply to any online retailer including Walmart, Target, and smaller specialty shops. Learning to shop online safely opens up a world of products that may not be available in your local area.
Creating an Amazon Account
Open your web browser and go to amazon.com. Click the Account and Lists button at the top right, then select Start Here. Enter your name, email address, and create a password. Amazon will send a verification code to your email enter it to confirm your account.
After creating your account, add your shipping address. This is where your orders will be delivered. Make sure the address is complete and accurate, including your apartment number if applicable. You can add multiple addresses for example, your home address and your vacation address.
Searching for Products
The search bar at the top of the Amazon page is your main tool for finding products. Type what you are looking for gardening tools, reading glasses, bird feeders and press Enter. Amazon will show a list of relevant results. Use the filters on the left side of the results page to narrow down by price, brand, customer rating, and other criteria.
Pay close attention to customer reviews. Look for products with at least 4 stars and read a mix of positive and negative reviews. The most helpful reviews are written by people who have actually used the product and describe specific features and experiences. Be cautious of products with very few reviews or reviews that seem overly similar to each other.
Understanding Product Listings
When you click on a product, the product detail page shows photos, a description, pricing information, and customer reviews. Scroll through the photos to see the product from different angles. Read the product description carefully to ensure you are getting the right size, color, and features.
Check the Sold By and Ships From information. Products sold and shipped by Amazon itself offer the most reliable customer service and easiest returns. Third-party sellers can also be trustworthy, but check their ratings and return policy before purchasing. Look for sellers with a rating above 95% and at least 1,000 customer ratings.
Making a Purchase
When you are ready to buy, click the Add to Cart button. This saves the item in your virtual shopping cart without purchasing it yet. When you have finished shopping, click the cart icon at the top right and then click Proceed to Checkout. Review your order to make sure everything is correct.
Amazon requires a payment method to complete your order. You can add a credit or debit card, or use a gift card balance. Amazon encrypts your payment information and does not share it with sellers. Once you confirm your order, Amazon will send a confirmation email with tracking information so you can follow your package’s delivery progress.
Returning Items That Are Not Right
If a product arrives damaged, is not what you expected, or simply does not work for you, Amazon makes returns easy. Go to Your Orders in your account menu, find the item you want to return, and click Return or Replace. Amazon will provide a return shipping label that you can print and attach to the package.
Most items can be returned within 30 days of delivery. Drop the package at a nearby shipping location such as a UPS Store or Amazon Locker. The refund is typically processed within a few days after the return is received. Amazon’s return policy is one of the most generous in retail, which makes online shopping less risky for first-time buyers.
Shopping Safely Online
Only shop on websites that use https in the web address. The s stands for secure. Look for a padlock icon in the address bar of your browser. Never make a purchase on a website that asks you to pay by wire transfer, gift card, or cryptocurrency these are common signs of scams.
Keep records of your online purchases including order confirmation emails and receipts. If you have a problem with an order, contact the seller first through the website’s messaging system. If the issue is not resolved, your credit card company can help you dispute the charge. Shopping online is generally safe when you follow these basic precautions.
