How to Use YouTube for Learning New Skills, Hobbies, and Entertainment

YouTube is the world’s largest video library, and it is completely free. Whether you want to learn a new hobby, fix something around the house, follow along with exercise routines, or watch classic television shows, YouTube has content for virtually every interest. The platform is particularly valuable for seniors because video instruction is often easier to follow than written instructions.

This guide explains how to find reliable content on YouTube, how to save videos for later, and how to customize your experience for comfortable viewing.

Getting Started with YouTube

Open the YouTube app on your phone or tablet, or go to youtube.com on your computer. The home page shows recommended videos based on your interests. As you watch more videos, YouTube gets better at suggesting content you will enjoy.

The search bar at the top of the page is your main tool. Type what you want to learn, such as how to knit a scarf, chair yoga for seniors, or beginner watercolor painting. YouTube will show thousands of relevant results. Look at the view count and publication date to find popular, recent videos.

Finding Quality Instructional Content

Not all YouTube videos are created equal. Look for channels with many subscribers and positive comments. Videos with clear audio, good lighting, and step-by-step demonstrations are ideal. Check the video description for links to additional resources or supplies mentioned in the video.

For practical skills, channels from established organizations are trustworthy. The American Heart Association has exercise videos. PBS and NPR offer educational content. Major tool manufacturers like Lowe’s and Home Depot have home repair tutorials. These sources provide reliable, well-produced content.

Creating Playlists to Organize Videos

Playlists help you save and organize videos for later viewing. While watching a video, tap the Save button below the video player and select Create New Playlist. Give your playlist a name like Gardening Tips or Chair Exercises. You can add any video to your playlists for easy access later.

To view your playlists, tap the Library tab at the bottom of the YouTube app. Your playlists appear in a list. Tap any playlist to see all the videos you have saved. This is perfect for building a collection of exercise routines, recipe tutorials, or anything you want to revisit without searching each time.

Adjusting Video Settings for Comfortable Viewing

YouTube offers several settings to make watching more comfortable. Tap the gear icon in the video player to adjust playback speed. Slowing the speed to 0.75x or 0.5x helps you follow along with detailed instructions. Speeding up to 1.25x or 1.5x is useful for lectures or presentations.

Enable captions by tapping the CC icon in the video player. Captions display spoken words as text on screen, which is helpful if you have difficulty hearing. You can customize caption size and color in YouTube’s settings. Tap your profile picture, then Settings, then Captions to adjust how captions appear.

Staying Safe on YouTube

YouTube is generally safe, but some content may not be appropriate or accurate. Stick to well-known channels from established creators. Be skeptical of videos promoting miracle health cures, get-rich-quick schemes, or products that seem too good to be true.

Use the Report feature if you encounter inappropriate content. Tap the three dots below a video and select Report. You can also block channels whose content you do not want to see. YouTube’s comment sections sometimes contain spam or misleading information, so focus on the video content rather than comments.
