How to Use Google Maps for Directions: A Simple Guide for Seniors

Google Maps is one of the most useful apps on any smartphone or tablet. It provides turn-by-turn driving directions, shows public transportation routes, helps you find nearby restaurants and stores, and even shows real-time traffic conditions to help you avoid delays.
Many seniors avoid using Google Maps because it seems complicated, but the app is designed to be intuitive. This guide breaks down the essential features step by step. Once you learn the basics, you will never need to ask for directions again.
Getting Started with Google Maps
Open the Google Maps app on your phone. It will show a map of your current location marked by a blue dot. You can move around the map by dragging your finger across the screen. Pinch two fingers together to zoom out and see more area, or spread them apart to zoom in for street-level detail.
Rotate your phone to landscape mode for a wider view of the map. Tap the compass icon in the top right corner to orient the map so north is facing up, or tap it again to follow your current direction of travel. Experiment with these views to find what feels most natural.
Searching for a Destination
Tap the search bar at the top of the screen and type an address, business name, or type of place you want to find. For example, typing grocery store near me will show all grocery stores close to your current location. Tap on a result to see more details including hours, phone number, and reviews.
To save time, try using voice search. Tap the microphone icon in the search bar and speak your destination clearly. Say something like navigate to 123 Main Street or find coffee shops near me. The app will process your voice command and show results automatically.
Getting Driving Directions
After searching for a destination, tap the Directions button at the bottom of the screen. The app will show your current location as the starting point by default. Tap the car icon for driving directions. Google Maps will calculate the best route and show multiple options with estimated travel times.
Tap a route to select it, then tap Start to begin navigation. The app will provide spoken turn-by-turn directions through your phone’s speaker. The screen shows your route with a blue line, and a bar at the top displays your next turn and distance remaining. You do not need to look at the screen constantly just listen to the voice instructions and drive safely.
Using Public Transportation Directions
If you use buses or trains, tap the train icon when viewing directions. Google Maps will show nearby transit stops, routes, and departure times. It includes service alerts for delays or construction. The app tells you which platform to go to and which direction the train should be heading.
Real-time updates show if a bus or train is running on time or delayed. Your phone will vibrate or alert you when your stop is approaching, so you do not need to worry about missing your stop while reading or relaxing during the journey.
Saving Favorite Places
Save your home address and frequently visited places for quick access. Tap the Saved tab at the bottom of the screen. Tap Labels and add your home and work addresses. Once saved, you can get directions to these places with just two taps instead of typing the full address each time.
You can also create lists of places you want to visit. Tap New List, give it a name like Restaurants to Try or Places the Grandkids Will Love, and save locations you encounter while browsing the map. When you are ready to go, open the list and tap any location for directions.
Exploring Your Area
Tap the Explore tab at the bottom of the screen to discover nearby restaurants, attractions, parks, and events. You can filter by category, price range, and rating. Each place shows photos, user reviews, and popular times which tells you when a restaurant tends to be busiest.
Google Maps is particularly helpful when visiting a new area. Use Street View by tapping a location and then the Street View thumbnail to see what the area actually looks like. This helps you recognize landmarks and feel more confident navigating unfamiliar neighborhoods.
Start using Google Maps for short trips to familiar places. As you grow comfortable with the voice navigation and interface, try using it for longer journeys. Many seniors find that Google Maps gives them the confidence to drive places they would not have attempted before, opening up new possibilities for independence.
