How to Find Free Wi-Fi and Use Public Computers Safely

Internet access is essential for staying connected with family, managing healthcare, and accessing online services. If you do not have internet at home, or if your connection is unreliable, free Wi-Fi hotspots and public computers are available at many locations in your community.
This guide explains how to find free Wi-Fi safely, how to use public computers, and what precautions to take to protect your personal information when using shared devices.
Finding Free Wi-Fi Hotspots
Your local public library is the best place to start. Nearly all libraries offer free Wi-Fi to visitors, and many have computer labs where you can use their machines at no cost. Library staff can help you connect and answer questions. Libraries also typically offer printing services for a small fee.
Coffee shops like Starbucks and McDonald’s restaurants offer free Wi-Fi to customers. You do not need to make a purchase in most cases, but buying a small coffee is a courteous way to thank the business for providing the service. Ask an employee for the Wi-Fi network name and password if it is not posted clearly.
Connecting to a Wi-Fi Network
On your phone or tablet, open Settings and select Wi-Fi. Your device will scan for available networks. Select the network name provided by the location. If a password is required, enter it exactly as shown including capital letters and symbols.
Once connected, your device will remember the network and automatically reconnect when you visit the same location. This is convenient for regular visits to your library or favorite coffee shop. The Wi-Fi icon in your device’s status bar confirms you are connected.
Using Public Computers Safely
Public computers at libraries and community centers are convenient but require careful use. Never save your passwords on a public computer. When the browser asks if you want to save your password, click Never or No. Always use private or incognito browsing mode if available.
After finishing your session, log out of all websites you visited. Close the browser completely. If you logged into email or a patient portal, logging out prevents the next person from accessing your accounts. Do not leave the computer unattended while logged in.
Staying Safe on Public Wi-Fi
Public Wi-Fi networks are less secure than your home network. Avoid accessing sensitive accounts like banking, investment accounts, or any site that requires your Social Security number while connected to public Wi-Fi. Save these activities for when you are on your home network.
Look for websites that display a padlock icon in the address bar. This means your connection to that website is encrypted. Most modern websites including email, social media, and shopping sites use encryption automatically. If a site does not show the padlock, avoid entering any personal information.
Community Resources for Internet Access
Many communities offer programs to help seniors get internet access at home. The federal Affordable Connectivity Program provides discounts on internet service for eligible households. Senior centers often have computer labs with free access and classes to help you learn new digital skills.
Ask your local Area Agency on Aging about technology assistance programs in your community. Some organizations provide low-cost tablets and internet service specifically for seniors. These programs recognize that internet access is essential for healthcare, social connection, and accessing government services.
