Thomas Tuchel’s England Problems: Why the Manager Needs to Tear His Plan Up and Start Again

Thomas Tuchel faces mounting pressure as England manager after a series of disappointing results have raised questions about his suitability for the role. The German coach, appointed with great fanfare, has struggled to get the best from England’s talented squad, and qualification for the 2026 World Cup is looking increasingly uncertain.
Tuchel’s tactical approach, which brought success at club level with Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain, has not translated effectively to international football. Club managers have daily access to players, time on the training ground to implement complex systems, and the ability to sign players who fit their tactical requirements. International managers face the opposite constraints.
Critics argue that Tuchel’s defensive style does not suit the attacking talent available to him. England possesses some of the most exciting attacking players in world football, but the team under Tuchel has looked cautious and uninspired going forward. The creative players who shine for their clubs appear constrained by a system that prioritizes defensive organization over attacking expression.
Several tactical issues have been identified. The team struggles to progress the ball through midfield against organized defenses. The pressing system, effective at club level, has been disjointed with the limited training time available internationally. Set pieces, once England’s strength, have become a weakness.
Player selection has also drawn criticism. Some of England’s most in-form players have found themselves on the bench or left out of squads entirely. While every manager has their preferences, the perception that Tuchel is not selecting players on form has created tension between the manager and the fan base.
With qualification for the 2026 World Cup in the balance, the pressure on Tuchel has intensified. England’s group, which should have been manageable, has become complicated by unexpected dropped points. Failure to qualify for a World Cup would be a catastrophic outcome for a nation that reached the semi-finals in 2018 and the final in 2021.
The FA faces a difficult decision. Replacing a manager mid-campaign carries its own risks. But allowing a disappointing campaign to continue without intervention could result in missing the World Cup entirely. Tuchel needs to find solutions quickly, or his tenure as England manager may come to an abrupt end.
