SpaceX Unveils Starship V3: 33 Raptor Engines, Three Grid Fins, and a Complete Redesign

SpaceX has unveiled the most dramatic overhaul of its Starship rocket to date. Starship V3, scheduled for its maiden flight on May 19, 2026, incorporates a clean-sheet redesign of its propulsion systems, structural architecture, and launch infrastructure.

The Super Heavy V3 booster features several radical changes. The number of grid fins has been reduced from four to three, each now 50% larger and significantly stronger, with a new catch point and repositioning to reduce heat exposure during hot-staging. The fuel transfer tube has been completely redesigned and is now roughly the size of a Falcon 9 first stage, enabling all 33 Raptor engines to start simultaneously.

An integrated hot stage replaces the previous single-use protective interstage, with the booster’s internal fuel tank pressure and a non-structural layer of steel now protecting it during stage separation.

Mars Architecture Taking Shape

The V3 redesign is not incremental — it represents SpaceX’s final orbital vehicle architecture before committing to Mars-grade production. Elon Musk has stated that Starship V3 will be the baseline for the Mars fleet, with the capacity to deliver over 200 tons to low Earth orbit in fully reusable configuration.

SpaceX also confirmed that Starlink is now operational on Air Force One, and that the company plans to file for an IPO that could be one of the largest in history, with valuations exceeding $300 billion.

The company’s Colossus 1 supercomputer — 220,000+ NVIDIA GPUs consuming 300MW — has been contracted to Anthropic in a landmark deal that merges space infrastructure with AI compute.
